Bastille – Pompeii
The first shot in this video is an extreme long shot of the
artist and there is diagetic sound at the start, which is unconventional of a
stereotypical music video, and I feel that the diagetic sound suggests that the
video is going to tell a story of some sort.
This video has the name of the artist and song edited into
it, which is also an unconventional thing to do, but I think that it fits the
genre.
15 seconds in we get the first close-up shot of the artist
and the track starts playing.
Then there is a cut to an over the shoulder shot of the
artist looking out of a window. In this same shot we have two pull focuses. One
where the landscape is in focus and the man is out of focus, and then the
camera focuses on the man and throws the landscape he is looking at out of
focus.
We have another long shot, only the artist is stood in the
same position as in the last shot which may suggest that time hasn’t moved, we
could easily build this idea in our video.
As the camera begins to follow him, there is a cut to a
different setting under completely different lighting which I feel we could
achieve and it would suit the ideas we already have as it puts the artist in
the spotlight but also looks quite dark and mysterious.
I like the idea of some shots of the artist singing followed
by others of him just walking/ not singing, as it makes the shots less harsh
which for a song in this genre works.
The shot of him
walking down the steps in two different settings looks very effective and could
easily be done by us by using final cut pro x.
They use a tracking shot of him on the bike which looks
effective but wouldn’t be easy for us to do. The camera is also unsteady for
most of the video which is unconventional, I think we would only use this
handheld technique if we were trying to show something but I don’t think we’ll
film handheld as this will look unprofessional.
This shot of him in front of the camera with the light
coming on one side of him and the tree stretching over him looks very unique
and effective and we could achieve this in our video which I feel will make it
appeal to the genre and it’s target audience.
A low angle shot of him running in another setting – an
arcade – this would be difficult to achieve however not impossible. I don’t
think we’ll use a shot like this one as we were thinking of filming her sitting
or kneeling on the floor because of the lyrics.
Another lighting technique we could use is the car lights in
the dark. This is simple yet very effective and would fit perfectly with our
song, artist and genre.
Another example of the video matching the lyrics which are
being sung. We could easily shoot Morgan for example looking up as she sings “above”.
This is similar to the mirror shot we were thinking of using
in our video and here we can see how effective it looks.
This extreme long shot wouldn’t be impossible for us to do. Although
we wouldn’t be able to film in desert-like conditions, we could quite easily
get a shot of Morgan walking through a field from a distance.
How effective would an extreme long shot be? You could jump cut it on the beat to move her closer? That may work - consider the preferred reading.
